Marcel Duchamp

Love him or hate him-he was a huge force in re shaping modern art. He pushed and even broke many of the sacred boundaries of the art world and has often be labelled vulgar for his pains.

He invented the concept of the ‘ready made.’ Basically the ready made was something-anything-that an artist took from everyday life; and placed in another context. The new context of the object was what defined it as ‘art’. His most infamous ‘ready-made’ was a urinal fountain. He took a urinal fountain and submited it to a gallery-scandel insued of course.

Cupid and Psyche

May 8th 2006 13:06
Psyche was the beautiful daughter of a king. Her beauty soon became renowned in their kingdom and she was so gorgeous that the people started worshiping her instead of Aphrodite. Aphrodite-as you can imagine was considerably pissed off at this development and sent her son Eros or Cupid to make the girl fall in love with the grossest thing on earth. But, Cupid actually ended up falling for the girl himself. In order to be with Psyche and to not make his mum any angrier Cupid came up with a plan. Psyche was told that she had to go to a very desolate place and be married as punishment. However once their Zephyr took her to a glorious palace that was to be her home. Cupid only came to her in the dead of the night when she could see nothing and told her that she could never look on him. At first Psyche was more than happy but then she started to get lonely.

Unwillingly Cupid allowed her to see her sisters. However when her sisters saw the grandeur of Psyche’s new home they got jealous and immediately started telling her that her husband must be evil and could very well be a vile monster. Psyche disturbed by these reports took a lamp to bed that night. Unfortunately Psyche did not discover a monster-but rather her husband was the most handsome man to ever be seen. She was so surprised that she dropped the lamp and this woke Cupid and he immediately seeing that Psyche had betrayed him bolted. Psyche was heartbroken and she tried finding the man she loved with no luck. She went to the goddesses for help but they were not willing to anger Aphrodite. Finally Psyche went to Aphrodite herself. Aphrodite made Psyche perform supposedly impossible tasks. For example she had to sort grain by grain and entire room of seeds before nightfall. Luckily some helpful ants came to her aid and she was able to perform the task.
