All hail Sylvia Lewis, Solo Dancer and Barrie Chase, Dancer in Wang's Palace (uncredited), for it is their dancing and the other astonishing musical moments that really pop out for me in this quite odd but strangely cool movie from 1956

The Conqueror starring John Wayne, Susan Hayward, Agnes Moorehead.

Get Up! T's

August 13th 2010 23:33
Original Creative Writing: GetUp!

We've designed two t-shirts to help you tell your friends, family and passers by on the street how you feel about carbon pollution and the need for renewable energy. We know that we need to reach as many people as possible with our message on carbon pollution if we're going to build a movement big enough to combat the vested interests.
If you can donate $AUS30.00 to help us get the message out in this last crucial week before the election, we will send you the t-shirt of your choice (postage included). Donate $50 and get two t-shirts. Do you want one of these limited edition election t-shirts for you or a friend?

Influence of David Williamson

August 13th 2010 03:10
Original Creative Writing: David Williamson
They say critics loath him, I do not agree, I have enjoyed his plays quite a lot. I have not always enjoyed them, but most of the time it is more the production of the play he has written that I am not enjoying, rather than the script as such. Even after taking a break dramatist David Williamson is still in the news.

No actor could play Abbott: Williamson

What do writers want to know?

August 11th 2010 00:49
Original Creative Writing: David Jobling
I have noticed, since returning recently to the study of writing, that these days it appears the emphasis is on having someone deliver a class who is a professional writer, or works in the writng industry, rather than having a really good and engaging teacher.

This means the person delivering a class may well be great at their particular professional writing job out in the real world, but not so hot at the art of teaching in the classroom. For example, I would always start by asking writers, "what do you want to know?"

Internet Censorship Victory!

August 7th 2010 01:27
Original Creative Writing: Internet Censorship Victory!
Late last night the Australian Coalition announced it won't be voting for an internet filter that censors the web. This comes after the Australian Government responded to the Get Up! campaign by deferring the filter until 2012 (with the likelihood that the filter will never come back in its current form).

With independent Senator Nick Xenophon, the Greens and now the Coalition all walking away from the ineffective policy of censoring the internet, there is now no way for the Senate to pass this scheme

Women Speak Out

August 3rd 2010 08:32
Original Creative Writing: fresh from Get Up!
Women are being shamefully overlooked in this election by politicians and the media. The turn of female voters away from Tony Abbott is being dismissed as a turn towards Julia Gillard's gender, while Tony Abbott's archaic and indefensible views on issues affecting women go unexamined and unchallenged.

That all ends today. Watch our new video from GetUp women, putting Tony's words on the record for all Australians to see:
