A Muse - paintings and prints by Janice Lane
Opens: 12:30pm, Saturday September 25
Concludes: Late November
The Bird in Hand Gallery
Corner Bird in Hand & Pfeiffer Roads
Woodside
Emerging visual artist Janice Lane presents an exhibition of paintings and prints at the Bird in Hand Winery gallery from September.
Janice recently travelled to the Yuendumu Community - 280 kilometres north west of Alice Springs - doing voluntary work with members of the Warlukurlangu Aboriginal Artist's Corporation. Warlukurlangu is a not-for-profit organisation established to support Indigenous artists in the region.
During her time in the Northern Territory, Janice was inspired by the work of Warlukurlangu's assistant manager - Gloria Morales - who runs a Dog Protection Program with the support of the Arts Centre, caring for the large amount of stray dogs in the area.
Titled A Muse, this exhibition is a collection of Janice's most recent work based on her experiences working with and watching the Indigenous artists of Yuendumu. "This work comprises paintings and prints that I have created over the past two years. While some of the pieces were originally attached to different bodies of work that also included the dog metaphorically or symbolically, A Muse brings them together for the first time to create a collection that speaks of the often profound relationship between the dog and human."
A 2008 visual arts graduate of TafeSA's Adelaide College of the Arts, Janice is currently studying a Postgraduate Diploma in Visual Arts by specialisation at UniSA's South Australian School of Art. Over the past four years Janice has exhibited her work in group exhibitions across Australia.
The Helpmann Academy for the Visual & Performing Arts assists emerging artists to make the leap into professional practice, by providing a range of programs and opportunities including exhibitions, awards, grants, mentorships and international exchanges. The Academy's partners are TafeSA - the Adelaide College of the Arts and Vizarts O'Halloran Hill; University of South Australia - South Australian School of Art; University of Adelaide - Elder Conservatorium; Flinders University - Flinders Drama & Flinders Screen Production; Adelaide Central School of Art.
