BAKE A HEALTHY BANANA CAKE FOR YOUR MUM
IN BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH!
This October, children, parents, teachers and the wider community can get involved in Breast Cancer Awareness Month by baking Jack's Banana Cake, a healthy and delicious treat to help raise awareness of the impact of cancer diagnosis on families and encourage open discussion on the subject throughout the community.
In rare endorsements, Cancer Council NSW and the National Breast & Ovarian Cancer Centre have pledged support for Susanne Gervay's Always Jack, a story that highlights the challenges that face children when their parents are diagnosed with cancer.
Always Jack uses humour and warmth to break down the taboos surrounding cancer and encourages parents, teachers and children to discuss the subject openly.
A multiple breast cancer survivor herself, Susanne Gervay faced cancer when her children were six and nine years of age, again when they teenagers and yet again just recently. She clearly has firsthand experience of how alone young people can feel when cancer touches their lives.
While she found Always Jack an emotionally difficult book to write, Susanne is passionate about reaching kids, parents, schools and the community. As a result, she is donating a percentage of her royalties to Cancer Council NSW and NBOCC.
Always Jack also includes details of the Cancer Council Helpline for families and children in need of support.
Susanne Gervay is an award-winning author, a specialist in child growth and development, and is nationally and internationally recognised for writing stories on topics as wide ranging as social justice, school bullying and burns. Her books are endorsed by Room to Read, The Alannah and Madeline Foundation, Life Education, The Children's Hospital at Westmead, and IBBY under the auspices of the United Nations. She has been invited to speak at international conferences from New York and Delhi to Beijing and Bologna about her healing youth stories.
Illustrator Cathy Wilcox has twin careers as a cartoonist and as an illustrator of children's books, and has been shortlisted in the Children's Book Council of Australia Awards three times.
