Breathing Place - an exhibition by Elizabeth Hetzel
Opens: 6:30pm, Friday June 25
Concludes: Sunday August 1
Hahndorf Academy
68 Main Street
Hahndorf, 7250
South Australian School of Art graduate Elizabeth Hetzel presents an exhibition of most recent work at the Hahndorf Academy.
Titled Breathing Place, the exhibition features a collection of gouache on canvas paintings, a video projection and an installation of pothole skins. The exhibition is Elizabeth's exploration of the notion that place is an intermingling of the inner and outer aspects of our experiences.
Elizabeth's investigation of place has led her to work directly with the physical land, immersing herself in the experience of working outdoors. Through this work, Elizabeth aims to capture the territory of exchange where the inner and outer aspects of place affect one another; the inner being her emotional, intuitive experience and the outer being aspects of the physical environment. "The process driven nature of this latest body of work is highlighted in experimental fragments and photographs, as well as a video projection."
Elizabeth graduated from the South Australian School of Art in 2009 and was selected for the Helpmann Academy Graduate Exhibition 2010, where she was presented with the Backer's Prize.

The focus of my work is to portray place as a creative process; a complex mix of the physical aspects of the environment such as land, light and space, with our own thoughts and feelings. Working as a participant rather than an observer, the art making becomes a dialogue between materials, aspects of the environment, my mind and my hands.
