Cameraman Willie Phua has unflinchingly stood beside a bevy of ABC correspondents in Asia, recording murderous race riots in Singapore and Malaysia, genocide in East Pakistan, bloody coups in Thailand, the assassination of Indira Gandhi in India, the rise of PeopleÂs Power in the Philippines and the war in Afghanistan.
He came under fire several times in the Vietnam War and was on the spot for the revolution that overthrew Marcos in the Philippines. His video record of a young protester challenging the tanks in Tiananmen Square is legendary.
Over more than three decades as a cameraman he has earned the unstinting admiration of just about every ABC journalist taken under his wing.
They consider him the man who taught them Asia.
He also trained a team of his own family members, who have faithfully and creatively followed the master to become some of the ABC's most trusted and reliable staff. With unprecedented access to this Phua dynasty of cameramen, as well as ABC correspondents and the ABC archives, author Bob Wurth brings to life all the excitement, danger and drama of life as a news cameraman recording history in this most volatile part of the world, from the decline of colonialism to the war in Afghanistan.
Bob Wurth was a foreign correspondent for the ABC based in Singapore between 1981 and 1985. He reported for radio and television on major events in Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, Pakistan and India. His assignments included the assassinations of Benigno Aquino at Manila Airport in 1983 and Indira Gandhi in New Delhi in 1984.
He was ABC Manager for Asia in 1984 and 1985 and acted in that position in 1988. He later became ABC Radio and Television Manager for Queensland, before taking up writing on a full-time basis in 1999.
He is SBS online's commentator on history and contributes features to major Australian newspapers. Bob's other books are Justice in the Philippines (ABC Books), Saving Australia: Curtin's Secret Peace with Japan and 1942: Australia's Greatest Peril.
