Adelaide Festival Centre's Performing Arts Collection presents
Opening Night: What People Wore to the Theatre
Just like the pubs closing at 6pm and one and two cent pieces, dressing up for opening nights at the theatre has, for the most part, become a thing of the past. Step back in time, to when going to the theatre was an occasion, at the Performing Arts Collection's latest exhibition, on display in the Festival Theatre Foyer from 10 December 2009 - 24 February 2010.
The exhibition features a variety of items on loan from the NIDA research collection, as well as selected items from the State Theatre Company of South Australia wardrobe department.
Featured decades are the 1840s, 1870s, 1900s, 1920s, 1930s, 1940s, 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, with each decade chosen because of a particular opening night or event of significance to South Australia's rich performance history.
Read about the program from the opening of Adelaide's first purpose-built theatre in 1841, glowing reviews from world-famous ballet dancer Anna Pavlova's opening night at the Theatre Royal, and newspaper social page commentary describing in detail selected dress and hair fashions of theatregoers.
You can also see photos (in the exhibition information) reflecting fashions of the time when artists such as Laurence Olivier, Vivien Leigh, Katharine Hepburn and Sir Robert Helpmann performed in Adelaide.
Items on display include an original 1950s Christian Dior beaded organza evening gown, a 1960s bright orange silk sheath dress complete with matching clutch, a late 1940s black and white two-piece cocktail suit and an 1870s bustle ensemble worn by Robyn Nevin in the State Theatre Company of South Australia's production of Hedda Gabler.
Exhibition Coordinator Jo Peoples says, This exhibition will remind every theatregoer of a 'special' event they have attended in the past century - whether it was in the Festival Theatre, the Theatre Royal or the Tivoli Theatre - or it could have been the performances of Anna Pavlova, The Ballets Russes, or Marlene Dietrich at the Adelaide Festival. Whatever it was, people dressed for the occasion.
