Kangaroo Island is a stop over for the Southern Wright Whales, on their annual migration to the Great Australian Bight. There they give birth to their young in warmer waters. They pass close to the shores of Kangaroo Island on their journey and have been seen from various locations around the island.

Kingscote and Penneshaw provide great viewing areas to catch a glimpse of these giants of the sea. New born Southern Wright Whales can weigh up to 1 ton with adults a massive 80 tons and up to 18m (60ft)in length. Their colour is generally dark with white belly patches. Each whale has an individual callosity pattern (lumps of lice) on their heads. The Southern Wright Whales were hunted almost to extinction but have now increased their numbers to more than 800. Due to their extreme size, appearance and behaviour, people from around the world marvel at these giants of the sea.

There are whale watching tours that offer great value for money, but nothing can quite beat a good close up look at the creatures. Here's something worth looking out for. Released early in November 2009, ABC's new and truly amazing docco, Whale Patrol

Following a team of whale entanglement experts, who help get whales out of tight situations this is a very close up and compelling story. They tell us that never before has a camera crew been granted unrestricted access to the frontline battlefield of whale entanglement rescue teams to record the dramatic events that unfold as they risk their lives to save these amazing animals.

Whale Patrol is an incredible blend of natural history, science and real television. Filmed on the run alongside the rescuers with additional footage from personal mini cams and underwater pole cams, it is whales up close and as they have rarely been seen before.
