Exchange for Change
The festival for exchanging clothes and ideas about ethical fashion
On the 29 - 31 July, Oxfam Australia and CarriageWorks will present Exchange for Change, a festival all about ethical fashion. The closer to Winterland - Sydney's biggest indie music, arts, food, and skating winter festival - Exchange for Change is a free three-day festival that gives people the opportunity to exchange, clothes and ideas about how to make ethical fashion choices.
The festival will feature:
Rethreads: Free Mass Clothing Exchange from 12-6 pm on Saturday 31 July - one of Sydney's largest clothing swaps which attracted thousands last year. Bring 20 items along and turn your trash into someone else's treasure.
Walk and Talk: Designer Showcase: Watch young, motivated Australian designers showcasing garment ranges and their commitment to leading the fashion industry into a more ethical era. Two sessions are available: session one from 6.30 - 8pm or Session 2 from 8.30 - 10pm on Friday 30 July. (RSVP essential, to exchangeforchange@oxfam.org.au).
Stories: Rising to the Challenge from 6.30 - 8.30pm on Thursday 29 July be part of an intimate panel discussion where designers, activists, workers and journalists talk about how they came to pursue careers that support ethical fashion, and about the challenges of increasing their ethics around fashion. The discussion will be followed by entertainment provided by 2ser.
Closing the festival, Seminar: Behind the Seams with Oxfam's Labour Rights Unit from 7 - 8pm, Saturday 31 July. Oxfam Australia has been engaging with corporations including Nike for the rights of workers in the fashion industry for more than 15 years. Hear from Oxfam staff about the progress that has been made and the work that remains ensure workers producing the fashion we love have their rights respected.
To wrap up the day of fashion conversation, chill out to the finalist of 2SER FM unsigned band for final Thursday night (29 July) at Winterland. CarriageWorks and 2SER have teamed up to present a night of new and unsigned band. If Disco on ice is more your style Sydney DJ Simon Caldwell (30 July) plays the final night - he's worked with the highest order of international talent including artists like Grace Jones, Normay Jay and James Brown.
Erica and George Gregan together with hatted chef Graham Jones have co-designed Winterland's European menu for GG Espresso at CarriageWorks. Open throughout Winterland serving their usual great coffee GG Expresso's special gourmet winter warmer menu includes mulled wine, warm pretzels and succulent sweets, thick Italian hot chocolate, hand-warming soups, cheese plates, jacket potatoes and traditional German sausage.
Winterland is the newest and coolest event on Sydney's social calander with fun, fresh, low-cost winter activities to keep visitors of all ages warm and fuzzy throughout July. Embrace the winter atmosphere and be warmed by the sweet aroma of roasting chestnuts, thick Italian hot chocolate, and spicy bratwurst.
