Australian Flute Festival at Elder Conservatorium of Music
The Elder Conservatorium of Music will be a buzz of activity over the October long weekend as the school plays host to the 2009 Australian Flute Festival.
A highlight of the national music calendar and the most important gathering for flautists in the country, the Australian Flute Festival will be the first large-scale flute event to be held in Adelaide in over 25 years. Elizabeth Koch OAM - Head of Woodwind Studies at the Elder Conservatorium  is Artistic Director of the festival. Together with festival directors David and Lyndie Leviston, Elizabeth is responsible for bringing the event to Adelaide.
The last time this city hosted a flute festival of this calibre was way back in the early 1980s, so it is a genuine privilege to be staging the 2009 event at the Conservatorium, Elizabeth says. The quality of the international artists and the wonderful array of top Australian flautists who will be coming to this year's event will be outstanding. We expect to welcome more than 300 players, students and teachers from right across the country and overseas, to perform and listen to a huge repertoire of world-class music.
The three day festival will include performances by world renowned flautists Jean Ferrandis (Paris), Tara-Helen OÂConnor (New York) and Uwe Grodd (New Zealand), as well as Australian performers Lisa-Maree Amos, Geoffrey Collins, Lisa Gill, Julia Grenfell and Sally Walker. The event program also features an intense schedule of master classes, lectures and workshops, as well as five performance competitions for flute, piccolo, young artist, flute ensemble and flute choir.
A group of 21 flautists from the Elder Conservatorium will be taking part in the Australian Flute Festival, with the support of a Helpmann Academy grant. To have all of these musicians in Adelaide at the one time will be something that most of these students have never experienced, Elizabeth continues. The group will have the rare opportunity to learn from a range of top-quality musicians during the festivalÂs master classes, as well as listen to amazing performances throughout the weekend.
The Australian Flute Festival will be held on October 3-5 at the University of Adelaide's Elder Conservatorium of Music.
The Helpmann Academy for the Visual & Performing Arts assists emerging artists to make the leap into professional practice, by providing a range of programs and opportunities including exhibitions, awards, grants, mentorships and international exchanges. The seven partner schools that make up the Academy are the Adelaide Centre for the Arts and Vizarts OÂHalloran Hill (tafeSA); Adelaide Central School of Art; Elder Conservatorium of Music (University of Adelaide); Flinders Drama & Screen Production (Flinders University) and South Australian School of Art (UniSA).
