REMEMBER THE Festival-Cannes, coming up from 12th - 23rd May 2010
The official poster of the 63rd edition is a creation by Annick Durban from a photograph of Juliette Binoche by Brigitte Lacombe.
Ever since the invention of the travel brochure a country can make some money by selling itself as a tourist destination, but have you noticed how countries are also selling themselves as places to shoot movies? I find it quite amusing to keep up with. Did you know for example; since 2009, France offers a 20% tax rebate for foreign features and TV productions? Imagine if they were able to provide the same to individual tourists?
And the descriptions: France is a house with many doors. 200 features are produced there every year, from low budget to USD100 million epics.
Therefore you can find crews and solutions at all price ranges, from studio movies to guerilla filmmaking. Guerilla film maker Kobayashi is an admirer of Francois Truffaut.
At the age of 27, he flew to France, wanting to be his AD. However, Kobayashi had no contacts to reach Truffaut. He came back to Japan even without seeing him. Kobayashi's reckless audacity didn't work.
Speaking of Japanese filmmakers: In 1985, Assassination director[B] Masahiro Shinoda declared to journalist Judy Stone - 'What characterizes Japan is the imposition upon the people of absolute power and authority without the right to question and debate. The United States, despite its injustices, has seemed to the Japanese a fresh force and inspiration for those burdened with the weight of authoritarianism'. 20 years after WW2, Japan was going through Post-Anpo disillusionment and the whole gamut of political extremism. The time was ripe for searing black and white jidai geki reflecting those times of violence. Great directors like Shinoda, Gosha, Misumi, Okamoto and Kudo all launched themselves into the melee and made sharp jidai geki that were heavily tinged with their new-wave personalities.
There are strong cultural links between France and Japan. I notice them often. So, France and the big location sale. Recent film production units that have been booked in,
- Merlin - season 3, Brittish TV show ; season 2 already got TRIP approval (Producer : Shine Ltd / BBC - Line producer : Firstep) ;
- the US feature Woody Allen Summer Project 2010 (Producer : Gravier Productions - Line producer : Firstep) ;
- The Tourist, US remake of the French film Anthony Zimmer, starring Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp (Producer : Tourist Productions / GK Films - Line producer : Peninsula) ;
- Poubara's Lion, Gabonese feature (Producer : Les Films de l'quateur - Line producer : Adelaide Productions).
These 4 productions fitted the criteria, and scored the necessary number of points as stated by Film France. These 4 projects should be spending a total of euros13.5 million in France.
Then there's the Festival-Cannes, coming up from 12th - 23rd May 2010

Continuing the series of heroines as representations of screen mysteries, initiated two years ago, festival organizers were charmed by this allegorical figure of the cinema who gives life to the image with a single stroke of her luminous brush.
The figure illuminates the scene with her presence; the magic of her enigmatic gaze heightened by her austere attire, the grace of her gesture is an invitation to follow.
