Gone With the Wind

"Frankly my dear I don’t give a damn.”
Even though it isn’t the most accurate quote in terms of the book, the idea of Clark Gable saying those words makes me swoon! If you don’t know it yet-I’m talking about Gone With The Wind. While the movie was absolutely amazing the book is a must read. The characters are so vivid and by reading it you get a very thorough education on America’s history during the Civil War. Even though Gone With the Wind is one of my all time favourite books there is one element that no one can escape when reading it. The question is, is Gone With the Wind racist? The short answer is yes. The book almost legitimises the Ku Klux Klan which is absurd and provides a very warped view of African Americans. So knowing this, why should we still read it? Well, because it shows how racism can become engrained in society, how it can become acceptable and almost unconscious. By seeing that it provides us with a framework of what not to do, and gives us the tools we need to recognise that racism is occurring. Thus my advice is, read the book enjoy it for the masterpiece it is but if you do-make sure you read it keeping in mind that the discourses in it can be representative of a racist point of view.

Did much of that come out in the movie? I've only seen it once, but I don't remember it being so much about race.
That famous phrase though has been the bane of many women's lives ever since.... =P
