April 17th 2010 22:26
Original Creative Writing: Gary Kemp
Spandau Ballet is a British band formed in London in the late 1970s. Initially inspired by the New Romantic fashion, their music has featured a mixture of funk, jazz, soul and synthpop. They were one of the most successful bands of the 1980s, achieving ten Top Ten singles and four Top Ten albums in the UK between 1980 and 1990.

Gary not only knows how to dress well, and compose a song well, he writes brilliantly too. Great bloke, great band, great book
-Bob Geldof

I Know This Much
From Soho to Spandau
Gary Kemp

When you'e been in one of the most successful bands of the eighties, hung out with all (and sundry), partied hard, seen friendships break up and break down, written a number of certifiably classic songs, found yourself and your bandmates adrift and in court, pretended to be Ronnie Kray for several months, then you'e got a story to tell.

It could be the story of a working class boy disappointed by the guitar he got for Christmas who went on to use this instrument to make a life unrecognisable to his parents. Or the story of a teenager who joined the chemically fuelled, Bowie-fixated, glitterball Soho scene of the late seventies, got up to his tartan waistband in Marvin Gaye and obscure artistic references, and then ended up playing to millions at Live Aid. Or maybe the story of what happens when a boy becomes a man and then a husband -a couple of times -and when a son became a father, then watches his parents grow old. Actually, I Know This Much is all of these things. Brilliantly written by Gary Kemp in a style that entertains and surprises, it evokes the wonder and strangeness of living at the heart of it all.
