Rare Indigenous Art from Remote Communities Showcased in Riverview Gamarada
For one week only (Sunday 08 Nov - Sat 15 Nov 12-6pm), contemporary Indigenous artworks by artists from the remotest communities in Queensland, Western Australia and Northern Territory are exhibited and for sale, as part of Storylines - Riverview's inaugural culture and arts festival at Saint Ignatius College running throughout November.

The collaboration with Shalom Gamarada Indigenous Scholarship Fund, an organisation providing residential scholarships for Aboriginal medical students to UNSW and Saint Ignatius' College, sees the sale of all artwork going to Indigenous medical students.

"A huge range of styles from diverse communities are for sale in a survey of contemporary Indigenous practice rarely seen in one show”, says Jenny Hillman Curator for The Indigenous Scholarship Fund shalomgamarada.org "Many works are never before seen paintings made specifically for the exhibition and we're really excited to be showcasing them in historic and stunning Riverview, overlooking Sydney Harbour."

Highlights include a new series of paintings by prolific Indigenous artist Joanne Currie, from Queensland, who won the Wynne prize in 2008; and an astounding 'Sun Mat' painting by in demand artist Regina Wilson from Peppimenarti in the Northern Territory. Regina, whose works are notoriously hard to find as she does not produce a lot of work, is a winner of the Telstra Art Award, and recently represented Australia in the Moscow Biennale.

From Western Australia Shane Pickett who has just completed a huge commission for the Supreme Court in Perth, exhibits a collection of dramatic contemporary landscapes. And Kathleen Petyarre, exhibiting for the first time in Sydney after many years and sell out shows in Melbourne, has submitted a selection of especially commissioned and new works. Utopia, where Kathleen is from, is also represented by a large selection of stunning new works by Gloria Petyarre, and the Pwerle sisters.

The senior artists of Yuendumu have sent glorious works, included are Paddy Sims, Shorty Robertson, Judy Watson and Liddy Walker. And work from Patrick Mumg Mung and Loongkoonan are also for sale.

Riverview Gamarada is part of 'Storylines '09' inaugural Cultural Arts Festival - a month long fiesta to inspire, awe and challenge lovers of culture, religion and art throughout November (7-29 Nov).

The Festival features artistic work representing the Indigenous experience, the African refugee community and the Muslim conversation, as a reflection of the school's culturally diverse student population and commitment to fostering and celebrating diversity and the arts; and engaging in cross religious and cultural dialogue. The key Festival fun includes a Play Season, Short Film Evening, Public Forum and Indigenous Art Exhibition.

Festival Director Suzanne Millar says: "We're thrilled to be putting on such a ground-breaking Festival at Riverview. Throughout November the arts will take issues important to African refugees, Muslim and indigenous communities in Australia from mere conversation points into the realm of vibrant, unforgettable experience. Art exhibitions, music, workshops, photographic installations and a discussion forum as well as plays, film and dance, will explore the ways art can foster transmission and wisdom of cultures. That the audience will include the younger generation - Australia's future lawyers, politicians, teachers, medicos, journalists, historians and artists - is the whole point," she says.
