Marcel Duchamp

May 15th 2006 14:02
Love him or hate him-he was a huge force in re shaping modern art. He pushed and even broke many of the sacred boundaries of the art world and has often be labelled vulgar for his pains.

He invented the concept of the ‘ready made.’ Basically the ready made was something-anything-that an artist took from everyday life; and placed in another context. The new context of the object was what defined it as ‘art’. His most infamous ‘ready-made’ was a urinal fountain. He took a urinal fountain and submited it to a gallery-scandel insued of course.

It sounds silly, but basically Duchamp challenges the notion that art is just about paintings-to his way of thinking anything has the potential to be art. What differentiates a normal object from art, is the role of the artist in declaring something art.

So is this art or not? What do you guys think?
