Michael Kirby: Don't Forget the Justice Bit
A new documentary from Film Art Doco to screen on ABC1
on Sunday 27 June 2010 at 10.20pm
Film Art Media is pleased to announce a new biographical documentary about the Hon Michael Kirby AC CMG, written and directed by Daryl Dellora and produced by Sue Maslin.
Filmed during and after his time on the High Court of Australia, the documentary explores the personal, moral and spiritual convictions of one of our most compassionate and incisive legal minds. It reveals the fascinating story of Michael Kirby's path to the law and his unrelenting commitment to human rights and justice under the law. The film also traverses the captivating territory of his unique family and his enduring relationship with Johan van Vloten.
In the film, Michael Kirby - who has been listed by the Bulletin as one of the top ten creative minds and one of the 100 most influential Australians of all time - speaks candidly and with insight and humour.
Michael Kirby's life continues to be both controversial and unconventional. He is one of Australia's most eminent figures to come out openly as a gay man.
The film would be of interest to middle, senior and tertiary students in the following curriculum areas:
Legal Studies
Australian Society
English
Film and Media Studies
Gender Studies
Values Education
Religion and Society
Michael Kirby - Don't Forget The Justice Bit was publicly launched as part of the 2010 Law Week celebrations. The film was financed by Screen Australia, Film Victoria and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and is the first documentary to be made about one of Australia's most influential judicial figures.
The documentary will have its television premiere on ABC1's Compass on Sunday 27 June at 10.20pm. If your school does not tape the program off air, it will be available for purchase from ATOM's The Education Shop.
