Sydney Children's Festival is jam packed with art, with a visual arts program so wide-ranging it verges on a junior degree (but way funner) the Festival could literally explode in a ball of craft and art-stuffs.
Fun 'n' Furry storybook making, cartoon character design studio, claymazing pottery and digital photography workshops have the kids using their minds, hands and creativity in ways they never have before.
And loads of free activities such as Make It! art space; Lil' Art Space, for children 5 and under; and beautiful collaborative arts projects Wishing Well and Picture Us mean the school holidays doesn't have to be a major drain on the finances.
The creative folk at CarriageWorks always had kid's (and their adult friend's) artistic individuality and imagination top of mind when creating this festival. Provide training, and experimentation in all aspects of visual art. The Festival opens to the public on Monday 27 September and runs throughout the school holidays until 09 October.
Festival Director Jamie Dawson says, "kids accompanied by their parents and carers can come to CarriageWorks throughout the school holidays and find a million ways to explore and develop their talent, learning about aesthetics and developing new skills to explore creativity. Providing children with an outlet to express themselves is one of the most important things for the development of individuality and self-esteem in young minds, and the main goal of the Festival is to do just this."
"The group environment of the festival encourages a fun and sharing place where children create their own unique pieces in a range of mediums whilst appreciating the works of those around them. Creating and appreciating visual arts is enjoyed and appreciated by all ages. This aspect of the Festival is really core to CarriageWorks role in the arts community, with a deep history in helping develop and nurture emerging artists. The programs at the Festival are really about ensuring that talent is encouraged, nurtured and developed at an early age," he says.
CarriageWorks visual art programs are also sustainably minded, using loads of recycled and reused art instruments and materials.
The Festival activities let kids run wild with their imaginations while creating sustainably and learning how to do this collaboratively with one another to create large pieces of work, animals, creatures and to record their day in digital pictures.
The Festival officially kicks off Monday 27 September with an action packed twelve days of performances, workshops and free activities. There is something for all kids to get stuck into no matter what their favourite things are - film, music, art, circus, live performance, a literary program and a bunch of totally loony entertainers are amongst the hundreds of events and activities on offer. Best of all - it's free entry AND over 75 percent of Sydney Children's Festival events and activities are FREE - so there's no doubt parents and carers will fall in love with Sydney Children's Festival as well.
As the program changes daily, the festival is perfect for multiple visits. A full festival program is available HERE on the Festival website or sign up for regular alerts to keep ahead of program of activities and special events.
