Our Mob 2010: Call for entries

Our Mob, Adelaide Festival Centre's statewide celebration of remote and regional South Australian Aboriginal artists, is now calling for entries for its 2010 exhibition, to be on display from 31 July - 5 September 2010.

Adelaide Festival Centre
Now in its fifth year, Our Mob is a prestigious project combining exhibitions and an Artists in Residence program that together provide an opportunity to raise awareness and understanding of South Australian Indigenous art and culture.

It features works of art created by Indigenous artists from around the state, on display at the Adelaide Festival Centre Artspace Gallery and foyers. Participating communities this year will include Anangu /Pitjantjatjara /Yankunytjatjara Lands (now 7 art centres), Ceduna, Koonibba, Pt Lincoln, Yorke Peninsula, Pt Augusta, Pt Pirie, Whyalla, Flinders Ranges, the Riverland, Mt Gambier, the Coorong, Murray Bridge, Adelaide Hills, Coober Pedy and Oodnadatta and more.

Once again, Our Mob will be held during SALA (South Australian Living Artists). Aboriginal artists from all around regional and remote South Australia are invited to participate by application. Works can include paintings, drawings, and wooden, carved or fibre objects, prints, photographs and new media, with approximately 80 artists selected by a panel to display their work in the exhibition.

Young people aged 18 years and under are invited to submit works for Our Young Mob. One of the benefits of being involved is that excitement is generated within the individual communities as a result of an artist being selected for this exhibition.

Coinciding with the exhibition opening will be a celebration event when many Aboriginal people will gather together in Adelaide. Artists are encouraged to travel to Adelaide to be part of the celebrations.

An important and integral part of Our Mob since 2006 has been the visiting Artists in Residence program where artists from regional areas travel to Adelaide to work in the Artspace Gallery alongside the exhibition. Here, they can demonstrate their art and share their stories with visitors and children through our schools program.

Our Mob's success is dependent on the partnership role of Country Arts SA, Ananguku Arts and SICAD (Statewide Indigenous Community Art Development), as well as community art centre managers, regional and remote communities and individual artists.

Entry for selection is free and is open to all Aboriginal artists living and working in regional or remote areas of South Australia. All works of art are offered for sale and most of the money is returned to the artists and their communities. The small commission is used to help run the exhibition and workshops.

Entrants will need to fill out an application form, available from:

Adelaide Festival Centre Our Mob Exhibition Coordinator: (08) 8216 8642
Ananguku Arts & Culture Adelaide Office: 08 8227 2788Or the form can be downloaded from: afc/whats-on/visual.php
Closing date for applications: 18 June 2010.
