Public Rally Against Barangaroo Over-development
Between 11.00hrs and 13.00hrs on Sunday 12 Sept, hundreds of concerned citizens will make a great deal of noise to indicate their dissatisfaction with development proposed by the State Government and Lend Lease for Barangaroo.
Members of the public are urged to join the Bang on for Barangaroo rally, which will meet at 47-51 Hickson Road, Millers Point.
This is the southern entrance to the Barangaroo site where the international passenger terminal used to stand.
Bang on by drumming, whistling, song and dance.
Sydney-siders demand an end to secret deals
The Lend Lease Concept Plan is not good enough - that's the loud and clear message being sent by The Friends of Barangaroo and their supporters. Councillor John McInerney, Planner, Architect, co-convenor of Friends of Barangaroo community group says he is appalled by the secrecy that surrounds the deals between the State Government and Lend Lease.
"A vital element of our harbour's heritage, character and significance is facing sudden and confronting change without any public scrutiny" he said. "The development is too big, too bulky, too dense and the only beneficiary will be Lend Lease"
Jack Mundey to address rally
Jack Mundey, Green Bans activist and saviour of The Rocks, will address the rally along with prominent local politicians. Musicians, artists, street performers, mums, dads, students and local residents are all invited to come along and be heard. It will be a colourful carnival atmosphere with hats and fancy dress encouraged.
"We will be letting the State Government and Lend Lease know that they have to lift their game. We will be making a lot of noise and we'll be having fun while we make that noise but our message is serious, our demands are serious" said rally organiser and Sydney Councillor, Marcelle Hoff.
A Once in a Lifetime chance to have your say in how Sydney will look
Barangaroo is public land. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Sydneysiders to have a say in how our City is shaped, now and in the future. There are many different views about what can be done on this site. Those ideas do not include out-of-proportion skyscrapers on the edge of Sydney Harbour and a hotel that extends over the water.
How to get there
By Public transport : The closest train and bus stop is Wynyard Station. From there walk north on York Street taking your first left on Margaret Street until you reach Hickson Street and then turn right for 200 metres
By Car (If you must): Ample metered parking is available along Hickson Street.
About Friends of Barangaroo
Friends of Barangaroo is a group of community members excited about the possibilities presented by the impending redevelopment of the Barangaroo section of our iconic Sydney Harbour. They are campaigning for: Open and transparent planning processes; Design excellence in redeveloping publicly owned land; Seamless integration of Barangaroo with the rest of the City; and Sydney Harbour foreshores as continuous public open spaces.
