This double bill of new Australian short plays IN REMEMBRANCE (OF) A SMALL DEATH is poetic, funny and profound.
In Remembrance Siobhan leaves Australia to escape the past, only to find the past has become an unwelcome travelling companion. Three actors play seven characters to explore the power of memory and the courageous ability to move on from a painful past. First performed at the 2006 Melbourne Fringe, In Remembrance won both Malthouse Theatre's 3Dfest competition and the Melbourne Fringe Festival Patrick Alexander Memorial award for outstanding performance writing.
World premiere A Small Death is a dark comedy with a powerful lyrical style. A woman's mobile phone stops working. A train stops in a tunnel and its passengers lay on the floor in contented surrender. A young girl throws herself off the top of an apartment building. The stylised performance weaves its way through the lives of contemporary city dwellers to explore the many small deaths we experience in our pursuit of a modern lifestyle.
Poetic, funny, and profound, both plays explore memory, identity and self-discovery through the eyes of two young women.
Directed by Delia Olam and designed by Alice Lindstrom, In Remembrance (of) A Small Death feature a strong female cast with Kate Roxby, Lydia Nicholson, Ashton Malcolm and Bianca Kostic-London. Playwright Anna Barnes is the recipient of a British Council Award. In 2008 she was the first Australian playwright to be invited to attend the European Interplay Young Playwrights conference in the Netherlands.
five.point.one present works that have a strong relationship with the world we live in and produces theatre that entertains, enriches and challenges their audience. In 2009 five.point.one artistic director, Corey McMahon was awarded Emerging Artist of the Year by the Adelaide Critics' Circle. The company's most recent work includes the highly acclaimed The Under Room.
