Eleanor Zecchin discovers the secret life of birds as she delves into the natural environment of her backyard and local surrounds to create a series of layered, oil paintings on canvas.

Riding Clouds

Investigating the natural environment of the spaces she lives and works in, Eleanor Zecchin has discovered the diverse and characterful life of the birds in her local surrounds. The birds' daily routines are revealed as they intertwine with her own, and their inherent character entertains her.

Cheeky galahs congregating on her neighbour's lawn in the afternoon, the hierarchy of the little red hens in her parent's backyard, the chirping of new hatchlings and the discovery of new birds to the area, all inspire Eleanor's new works.

'My paintings are citations of what I have seen, heard and felt while walking around the neighbourhood, hanging out washing in my backyard, visiting my parents or sitting on my back step with my morning coffee,' says Eleanor. 'It is exciting to watch the bird communities interact and to discover a new bird to the area.'

The works on canvas are also affected by nature from the outset. In creating the paintings Eleanor spreads an un-stretched roll of canvas outside to be exposed to the natural elements. Over a number of weeks she works her way around the canvas creating layers of paint in some areas, while leaving other parts exposed. After many different applications of layers and periods of rest, the canvas is divided and stretched then completed in Eleanor's backyard studio.

Eleanor Zecchin is a full time practicing artist based in the Adelaide Hills. In 2008 she obtained her Bachelor of Visual Art and Design from Adelaide College for the Arts and is currently undertaking postgraduate studies at the South Australian School of Art, UniSA. In 2009 Eleanor was awarded a Helpmann Academy grant along with an Ashington Mentorship with Melbourne artist Marise Maas. In 2009 she was also mentored by renowned Adelaide artist Annette Bezor.
