FREE EVENTS AT SYDNEY THEATRE COMPANY

Sydney Theatre Company presents a rehearsed reading of

The Slow Sword
by Yuri Klavdiyev
, translated by Noah Birksted-Breen

Wednesday 17 March 2010 at 7pm
Wharf 1, Sydney Theatre Company, Hickson Rd, Walsh Bay

The reading will be directed by STC Associate Director, Tom Wright, with a cast including Dan Wyllie, Torquil Neilson, Julia Billington and Helen Christinson.

The Slow Sword was given its first English language production by Sputnik Theatre Company (London, UK) in 2007. The play invites its audience to join Vlad, a young man with a profession, a healthy income and a gorgeous girlfriend, on a tour of the streets of Moscow. As he encounters a cast of degenerates, Vlad opens his eyes to the harsh realities of Russia under Putin.

After the reading, translator and Artistic Director of Sputnik Theatre Company, Noah Birksted-Breen, who has translated and directed numerous Russian works for British audiences, will discuss contemporary Russian playwriting and the art of translating from Russian to English.

Rough Draft #5: Who's The Best?
Saturday 20 February 2010 at 5pm
Wharf 1, Sydney Theatre Company, Hickson Rd, Walsh Bay

Sydney Theatre Companys first Rough Draft of 2010 plays host to the contemporary performance collective, post. Zoe Coombs Marr, Mish Grigor and Natalie Rose have the run of Wharf 1 for a week-long workshop on their latest work, Who's The Best?, leading to a free one-off work-in-progress showing at Wharf 1 on Saturday 20 February at 5pm.

Exploring the nature of competition and the business of becoming the best is the theme. During the week the trio, whose previous works include the darkly comic Gifted and Talented and Shamelessly Glitzy Work, will generate material through improvisation that they will then sculpt into a script.

Sydney Theatre Company Rough Drafts are week-long creative developments presented as part of its Next Stage Season that give theatre makers the opportunity to experiment; to try out new ideas, new ways of working and new collaborations.

Both events are free but booking seats online Sydney Theatre Company or by calling (02) 9250 1777 in advance is highly recommended.
