Russia

May 3rd 2006 13:11
Russia, an enigma and yet it is a country that has amazing pulling power. One can’t help but be in awe of Russia, the sheer depth of their history demands respect. Here’s a very brief introduction to a very complex country.

Capital: Moscow

Language
: Russian

Must see sites:

The winter palace and the hermitage museum:

The winter palace was were the Romonovs (ie the old kings/tsars of Russia) lived. The Winter Palace was built in 1754-62 for Empress Elisabeth, daughter of Peter the Great. By the time it was completed Elisabeth had already died, and only Catherine the Great and her successors could enjoy their new home. The Hermitage Museum was founded by Catherine the Great and has works from Leonardo di Vinci to Titan.

Palace Square:

Some of the biggest political struggles took place, most notably ‘bloody Sunday’ that initiated the 1905 revolution

The Kremlin:

the Kremlin is a self-contained city with a multitude of palaces, armories, and churches. The word "kremlin" simply means "fortified town." The Kremlin pretty much embodies early Moscow. Ten years after its founding Moscow gained enough power to become the seat of the Russian Orthodox Church. This inspired some of the spectacular ‘onion’ architecture of the site.

Intresting facts:

Russia has the most movie theaters in the world.

During the time of Peter the Great, any Russian man who had a beard was required to pay a special tax.

Famous Russians:

Tolstoy-her wrote War and Peace.
Tchaikovsky is also Russian-just think of V for Vendetta.
Lenin-love him or hate him he revolutionised an entire country.

Quotes about Russia:

“The secret of politics? Make a good treaty with Russia.” -Otto von Bismarck

“Russia is a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma.”-Winston Churchill

“I took a speed reading course and read War and Peace in twenty minutes. It involves Russia.”-Woody Allen
“There is no income tax in Russia. But there’s no income.”-Will Rogers.

“Homosexuality in Russia is a crime and the punishment is seven years in prison, locked up with the other men. There is a three year waiting list.”-Yakov Smirnoff

“I do not rule Russia; ten thousand clerks do.”- Nicholas 1

Russia is so huge and vast... it's hard to believe that that country stayed intact for so long!

Russia's not really stayed intact that much

There was a revolution in Febuary, 1917 (the successful version of the 1905 Revlution that Sara mentioned), and another in October 1917, and then some time in the 20's it became the USSR

Scotts spot on, Russia's been a centre of major conflict, the revolutions through 1905 to 1917, not to mention the formation of the USSR with the expansion of Russia to include 'buffer' states and then its collapse reducing Russia to its previous borders. Russia's one of those countries its together but then its really not.
