Russia, an enigma and yet it is a country that has amazing pulling power. One can’t help but be in awe of Russia, the sheer depth of their history demands respect. Here’s a very brief introduction to a very complex country.

The winter palace and the hermitage museum:
The winter palace was were the Romonovs (ie the old kings/tsars of Russia) lived. The Winter Palace was built in 1754-62 for Empress Elisabeth, daughter of Peter the Great. By the time it was completed Elisabeth had already died, and only Catherine the Great and her successors could enjoy their new home. The Hermitage Museum was founded by Catherine the Great and has works from Leonardo di Vinci to Titan.
Palace Square:
Some of the biggest political struggles took place, most notably ‘bloody Sunday’ that initiated the 1905 revolution
The Kremlin:
the Kremlin is a self-contained city with a multitude of palaces, armories, and churches. The word "kremlin" simply means "fortified town." The Kremlin pretty much embodies early Moscow. Ten years after its founding Moscow gained enough power to become the seat of the Russian Orthodox Church. This inspired some of the spectacular ‘onion’ architecture of the site.
Intresting facts:
Russia has the most movie theaters in the world.
During the time of Peter the Great, any Russian man who had a beard was required to pay a special tax.
Famous Russians:
Tolstoy-her wrote War and Peace.
Tchaikovsky is also Russian-just think of V for Vendetta.
Lenin-love him or hate him he revolutionised an entire country.

There was a revolution in Febuary, 1917 (the successful version of the 1905 Revlution that Sara mentioned), and another in October 1917, and then some time in the 20's it became the USSR
