Sammy J in the Forest of Dreams

September 16th 2009 11:09
Adelaide Festival Centre's inSPACE program presents
Sammy J in the Forest of Dreams

It’s a musical. For adults. With puppets.

Take the music from Disney, the drama of Lord of the Rings, and the emotion of Les Miserables. Then blindfold them, beat them, regain their trust, beat them again, and you might end up with something resembling Sammy J in the Forest of Dreams, running from 20 – 24 October at the Space Theatre.

Comedian Sammy J and puppeteer Heath McIvor (with a cast of 14 Hensen-inspired potty-mouthed puppets) are bringing their toe-tapping, cult-adult-comedy-musical to Adelaide for five naughty performances as part of his hilarious, hit world tour.

Directed by Alan Brough (Spicks and Specks), and featuring multi-award winning puppeteer Heath McIvor (The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, The Hobbit, Walking with Dinosaurs), Sammy J is sucked through a portal in his kitchen into a fantastical world, where he meets sarcastic talking trees, depressive birds, sexually depraved puppet-monarchs, and ‘weird, blue, talking things’, and embarks on a spoof fantasy quest to save its inhabitants from their tyrant king.

The story is told through clever, witty and at times hilariously filthy, songs, which have become signature to Sammy J’s performances, with catchy tunes that will keep audiences chuckling long after they should have stopped. The opening track entitled “F@#k You, Disney” brings to light Disney’s darker side with a mixture of shock and Sammy J’s pure charm.

Sammy J in the Forest of Dreams has received rave reviews and 5 star ratings at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Melbourne Comedy Festival, and throughout Scotland, England, and New Zealand. The show also won the Age Critics’ Award, and was a nominee for ‘Best Show’ at the 2008 Melbourne Comedy Festival. The city of Adelaide and the Forest of Dreams have an esteemed history: the show premiered at the 2008 Fringe Festival before taking on the world, and both Sammy J and Heath McIvor returned with solo shows at this year's Fringe.

Sammy J in the Forest of Dreams is part of a new movement of comedic puppetry for adults that is being thrust into mainstream theatre and film in recent years, including the hit Broadway musical Avenue Q, multi-award winning film Team America: World Police, and inSPACE’s recent development work Sexarella – Queen of the Galaxy. Comedic puppet shows for an adult audience such as Sammy J in the Forest of Dreams are just as thought provoking as they are funny.

Be sure to make a date with Sammy J and 14 of his closest friends, for a night of filthy, fanatical and hilarious foam-based hijinks.

Suitable for ages 16 and up.

“"Filthy, frenetic and gloriously funny." Chortle, UK

"Ingenious ... I've never been enchanted so rudely before." Scotland on Sunday

“This is as glorious as music theatre gets ... dry as a bone, but with lashings of total silliness and a heart of gold beating strong beneath piles of filth.” whatsonstage.com

Puppet show? Wow, it's been awhile, since I watched the puppet show five years ago, David.
