Josh Pyke is set to headline a brilliant line-up of musicians including Katie Noonan and The Captains, Street Warriors, Maggie Noonan, Koomurri Dance Troupe and Freshwater at the inaugural Sydney benefit concert Songs for Stories on Saturday 15 May at 7:30pm at the Sydney Town Hall, George Street, Sydney.

Hosted by Julie McCrossin, Songs for Stories is a celebration of words and music to raise urgently needed funds for The Indigenous Literacy Project (ILP), supplying books and literacy resources in remote indigenous communities.

Many ILP ambassadors have lent their support to the evening and are expected to attend the benefit concert which will also feature a message from ILP Patron Therese Rein, readings by Anita Heiss and David Malouf.

Songs for Stories is an initiative of The Indigenous Literacy Project in association with Sydney Writers' Festival and has the generous sponsorship of the City of Sydney.

Tickets are $65 ($55 concession) and available from April 10 through the Sydney Theatre at www.sydneytheatre.org.au and on 02 9250 1988.

The Indigenous Literacy Project is a partnership between The Australian Book Industry and The Fred Hollows Foundation which aims to raise literacy levels and improve the lives and opportunities of Indigenous Australians living in remote Indigenous communities. Since being founded six years ago, nearly one million dollars has been raised to supply books and literacy resources to remote Indigenous communities across Australia.

In 2009 ILP sent over 15,000 books to 160 communities across Australia and funded a full-time Co-ordinator based at The Fred Hollows Foundation in Darwin. In addition, The Indigenous Literacy Project launched BOOK BUZZ, a new early literacy project aimed at 0-5 year olds. BOOK BUZZ will be trialled in three remote communities in WA, NT and N-W NSW in 2010-2011.

ILP Patron Therese Rein is supported by a formidable list of ambassadors including Felix Riebl, Andy Griffiths, Tara June Winch, Geraldine Brooks, Kaz Cooke, Kate Grenville, Dr Anita Heiss, David Malouf, Sally Morgan, May O'Brien, Josh Pyke, Alexis Wright, Leonie Norrington, Katie Noonan, Adam James and Samuel Wagan-Watson who help to raise awareness for the ILP.
