STCinema kicks off its 2010 program

April 14th 2010 01:17
Original Creative Writing: Hunger
STCinema kicks off its 2010 program with a special screening of the award-winning feature film Hunger penned by acclaimed Irish writer Enda Walsh. The screening coincides with Sydney Theatre's presentation of Druid Ireland's The Walworth Farce, also written by Enda Walsh.

Hunger will screen on Sunday 25 April at 1pm.

Prior to Hunger there will be an exclusive screening of John Duffy's Brother, a short film written and directed by Mikel Murfi, director of The Walworth Farce. Immediately following the screenings, Artistic Director of Druid Ireland, Garry Hynes, will join us to discuss The Walworth Farce and Irish theatre.

Hunger is a compelling and unforgettable portrayal of life within the Maze prison at the time of 1981 IRA hunger strike led by Bobby Sands. With an epic eye for detail, the film provides an exploration of what happens when body and mind are pushed to the uttermost limit.

Hunger won the Camera d'Or prize at the Cannes Film Festival 2008, was named best film at the 2009 Evening Standard British Film Awards and nominated for six British Film and TV Awards 2008, including Best Screenplay. Closer to home, the film screened at the 2008 Sydney Film Festival, where it was awarded the inaugural Sydney Film Prize.

Hunger is rated MA 15 and is suitable for audiences aged 15 and over.

Enda Walsh

Enda Walsh shot to fame when he won both the George Devine Award and the Stewart Parker Award in 1997 with his play Disco Pigs. In 2007 and 2008 Enda won Fringe First Awards at two consecutive Edinburgh Festivals for his plays The Walworth Farce and The New Electric Ballroom. The former led the Guardian to name him 'one of the most dazzling wordsmiths of contemporary theatre.' His other feature film credits include an adaptation of his play Disco Pigs, Miss Emerald Isle, Island of the Aunts and Chatroom.
