Emerging Adelaide artist completes two-month residency in Berlin
Adelaide-based visual artist Amy Joy Watson has completed a two-month art residency at Takt Kunstprojektraum in Berlin, Germany.
Established in 2003, Takt Kunstprojektraum is an artist-run space in Berlin that accepts artists from across the world into a creative environment with their artist residency program. The primary purpose of the program is to provide artists visiting the German capital easy access to an environment that will foster their creative energies.
Amy's recent work involves the stitching together of balsa wood panels to create geometric forms, a technique she further developed at Takt Kunstprojektraum through painting and sculpture.
I approached the residency as a time for research and development, experimenting and exploring ideas and materials freely without the time constraints and other commitments normally that restrict my usual art practice Amy says. Immersing myself in rich artistic cultures and new, beautiful landscapes inevitably feeds into my work. Amy intends to use the work she created in Berlin as inspiration for a solo exhibition in late 2010 at the Contemporary Art Centre of South Australia. Amy also intends to share her experiences with students at the Adelaide Central School of Art upon her return.
Since graduating with Honours from the Adelaide Central School of Art in 2008, Amy has participated in numerous group and joint exhibitions across Adelaide. Following her first solo exhibition - Some place at FELTspace during the 2009 SALA Festival - Amy was the winner of the Core Energy Group Sculpture Award and the SA Life Young Artist Award. She was also a finalist in the 2009 Waterhouse Youth Art Prize.
Amy's two-month residency was supported by a Helpmann Academy grant.
The Helpmann Academy for the Visual & Performing Arts assists emerging artists to make the leap into professional practice, by providing a range of programs and opportunities including exhibitions, awards, grants, mentorships and international exchanges. The Academy's partners are TafeSA - the Adelaide College of the Arts and Vizarts O'Halloran Hill; University of South Australia - South Australian School of Art; University of Adelaide - Elder Conservatorium; Flinders University - Flinders Drama & Flinders Screen Production; Adelaide Central School of Art.
