Sydney Theatre Company presents
THE REMOVALISTS
by David Williamson
31 January to 29 March 2009. Opens Thursday 5 February 2009 at 8pm.
Wharf 1, Sydney Theatre Company, The Wharf, Pier 4, Hickson Road.
The hilarious but chilling Australian classic, The Removalists by David Williamson, is the first production of Artistic Directors Andrew Upton and Cate Blanchett’s 2009 Main Stage Season for Sydney Theatre Company. Directed by Wayne Blair, with a cast including Steve Bisley and Sacha Horler, the production is at Wharf 1 with previews from 31 January. The season has already been extended by two weeks to 29 March 2009 due to popular demand.
When rookie Constable Ross reports for duty at Sergeant Simmond’s police station, the young novice is entirely unprepared for the initiation that awaits him. Simmonds wastes no time in setting out his philosophy and his unorthodox methods of policing are revealed when two young women arrive to report that one of them has been beaten by her husband. A startling examination of the violence that underpins authority ensues.
Widely considered the breakthrough work of Australia’s most prolific playwright, The Removalists’ depiction of contemporary Australian society was confronting and shocking when first performed in 1971. With David Williamson updating some of the references and language used by his characters for this production, director Wayne Blair re-imagines the gruesome action and razor sharp satire for the present day.
The Removalists marks Blair’s Main Stage debut with Sydney Theatre Company following his highly successful Romeo and Juliet for the Company’s Education program in 2008. He also directed the acclaimed Ruben Guthrie downstairs at Belvoir which returns in Company B’s 2009 Season. Steve Bisley is one of Australia’s most respected actors, working across all mediums in a distinguished career spanning 30 years. On stage, memorable performances have included key roles in Williamson’s The Club and Don’s Party.
