The Tale of Genji by Lady Murasaki
It has been called many things. Possibly the first version of Sex and the city; it is a very big read, but a clear and erotic read.
Saga is a word that comes to mind, but not in a bad way. At the start of each section of this large scale story you need to become familiar with the characters, and the most important ones are set out clearly in order to clarify this for you. It is also extremely useful to have the Genealogical Tables of the charcters in order to keep tabs on who is intermingling with whom, and if it is tasteful or unholy.
There are so many beautiful descriptions of simple things it is a real feast, a banquet of delights. It is a long read. A solid read. Deeply passionate and at times running with such honesty it could almost be plucked off of the recent release shelf in the book shop. Difficult long read at times, but well worth the effort. Also, it is worth pointing out that the book will remain in your heart and mind for a long time, and once you have read each of the five sections, you will feel quite capable of starting again, for the re-read!
