GET YOUR HANDS DIRTY TO HELP THE PLANET
While winter is often a time to enjoy the great indoors, National Tree Day is a great excuse to get out in the great outdoors while doing something good for the planet.
To be held on Sunday 31 July from 11am - 1pm along the River Torrens near the Adelaide Zoo, National Tree Day is a day for all Australians to help out by planting and caring for native seedlings to improve the environment in which they live.
"The day provides a great opportunity for the community to come together, not only to get to know each other but also to get their hands dirty to help the planet," Deputy Lord Mayor David Plumridge said.
"You don't need to be an expert gardener, just have a passion for making a difference,"
National Tree Day is coordinated by Planet Ark and each year, Adelaide City Council, in partnership with the Department of Environment and Natural Resource's Million Trees Program and CMI Toyota, sponsors a tree planting site.
The event began in 1996 and since then more than two million volunteers have planted over 15 million native plants. The aim in Adelaide this year is to plant 5000 native trees within the two hours of the event.
There will be a free barbeque and refreshments for volunteers, as well as face painting and entertainment. Participants are advised to wear appropriate clothing - hat, covered shoes, long sleeved shirt, long pants and a rain jacket if required. Rubber gloves, tools and equipment for planting will be provided.
Since it was launched in June 2003, the Million Trees Program has planted 2,250,000 trees, with a further 100,000 to be planted between August and September this year, helping to clean the air and combat climate change.
Participants can register prior to the event at treeday.planetark.com or just come along on the day. Directions to the site can be found on the website.
