Supported by her five-piece band, Ursula Yovich combines an a cappella of Serbian songs, traditional song and blues in a remarkable musical journey between two worlds as she searches for her place of belonging. The concert includes a mix of old favourites such as Over the Rainbow, Fields of Gold and Let it Be and original songs, some of which were written with the help of James Shipstone, who co-penned with Yovich Spell on You which features on the new Message Stick album, Sending A Message. Yovich's music tells stories of growing up in Darwin with an Aboriginal mother from Arnhem Land and a father born in Serbia and are infused with sadness, love, separation and dislocated cultural identity.
Drawing upon her unique cultural background, Magpie Blues, is inspired by Ursula Yovich's totem, the Magpie. Born to an Aboriginal mother and Serbian father, her white feathers from Serbia and black feathers from Arnhem Land set this magpie apart from the flock. Charged with the stories of Yovich's life and delivered with an aurally captivating voice, Magpie Blues promises to bare a fascinating story of a true Australian songbird and recounts her memories of playing in Arnhem Land and tells tales of being bullied for being white trash.
Ursula Yovich's Magpie Blues promises to be powerful and stunning. The audience is offered a reflection about Australian identity, a relevant and familiar story with the added delight of Ursula Yovich's incredible voice. Riverside Theatres is tremendously excited to present this charming and passionate songbird as part of our Music Series said Director of Riverside Theatres, Robert Love.
Ursula Yovich has emerged as one of Australia's leading Aboriginal performers. Earlier this year, she performed at Sydney Festival First Night with the widely-acclaimed Black Arm Band alongside respected performers including Archie Roach, Bart Willoughby, Rachel Maza Long, Shane Howard and Lou Bennett. In 2007, Yovich received a Helpmann Award for Best Actress following her performance under the direction of Wesley Enoch in Company B's Capricornia and in 2006, she played in Belvoir's The Sapphires alongside Deborah Mailman for which she received a Helpmann Award nomination. Her stage musical credits also include The Wizard of Oz and Snugglepot and Cuddlepie. Yovich's film credits include Baz Luhrman's Australia and Jindabyne.
Magpie Blues is about me and about how I perceived my life as I was growing up - I called it Magpie Blues and I do have the blues in there. The blues really relates to my story said Ursula Yovich in The Adelaide Advertiser.
Music is her great joy and she sings everything from Fields of Gold and Let it Be to Tina Turner and Aretha Franklin. Her range is impressive: Bocelli after Caruso, the theme from Monkey, some haunting originals and (with excellent support from the band and MD Peter Casey) a telling rendition of Over the Rainbow. The Australian
"Magpie Blues is Yovich's life in story and song, a rich, complex and engaging experience that reveals the depth of her extraordinary talent - The star of the show never was in question."
